My Boy

When I look at Pea (and I spend A LOT of time studying his every feature - not to mention Chick's as well) I see the most beautiful, heartbreakingly stunning boy I have ever seen in my life.  Now, I realize that every mother thinks her children are the most beautiful in the world and I am not oblivious to this fact.  Pea is beautiful in all possible ways and I will always reserve the right to say so.

My little Pea is a trooper; he was born with pneumonia, he struggled through almost three full months of painful colic, and he suffered from horrible stomach cramps while waiting for his digestive system to develop fully.

Soon after his birth, we became aware of another issue he would have to face. Pea has Ptosis.  I mention it here because of a couple of comments I've received about him that I thought were surprising and disappointing.  He is not sleepy, he is not dopey, he has a congenital condition that causes his right eyelid to droop. While we do see it on any given day, it is mostly apparent when he is tired or after he's been crying. Some days it is very noticeable and others, not so much.

We will soon meet with a specialist to discuss treatment options for Pea (we've been waiting on this appointment for four months).  While we happen to think he is perfect as he is now, Ptosis could lead to serious issues with his vision if not treated. I hate thinking that he may have to endure more pain and suffering, but my motto lately has been "Short term yuck for long term gain".

This kid seriously rocks my world.  That face...that smile...those eyes...that hair...oops!  Hair will come in time...

6 Month Stats

The babies had their 6 month check-up (and immunizations) yesterday and they are doing very well.

Chick Stats:
Length: 26 inches
Head Circumference: 16 inches
Weight: 17lbs 12oz
Sitting Unassisted: "very advanced"

Pea Stats:
Length: 26 inches
Head Circumference: 17 inches
Weight: 18lbs 8oz
Two Bottom Teeth: "Early bird"

We were given the okay to stop boiling water for their bottles (thank goodness) and to start them on any kind of pureed food we want (except, of course, nuts and eggs). The doctor said that he typically likes to see babies again at 9 months, but since Chick and Pea are developing so well, we can wait until their 1 year appointment in August.

On our way home, I had to stop in at our local blood drive as I had an appointment to donate blood. As my body was being drained of its life force, I chatted up the nurse assigned to me. When my bag 'o blood was almost full, another nurse came over to tell me that I had a nice smile and that my whole face lit up when I smiled.

I told her that it is because I am happy from the inside out.*

Can't explain it any clearer than that.

*I also knew that there were Oreo cookies and juice waiting for me after the donation. That would make anyone smile!

An Invitation From High On Craft

Hi there Two Kayaks readers. This is K1's bff from High On Craft. (<--link) I know a lot of you are at home with your kids and might be looking for some crafts or activities to do with them that don't involve batteries or control pads. March break is around the corner and for the first two weeks in March I am going to be posting kid's crafts tutorials. This way, when the break rolls around you will be prepared with things for your children to do when they come up to you and whine "I'm bored."

The first post for my March Break series will be March 1st, but in the meantime you can check out the toilet paper roll craft tutorials that I've already posted.

Please note that my blog address has changed so if you were a follower in the past you'll need to update your feed subscription.

I look forward to seeing you on my site and thanks in advance for stopping on by!

Monday Bullets

  • I've been trying to find little musical instruments for the babies, but I'm not having any luck.  I went to the dollar store today, but only found recorders and xylophones.  I would love to find little tambourines and maracas.
  •  We are getting our second (only our second!) dump of snow right now and I love it.  Knowing I don't have to go out in it is why I love it.
  • Watching the athletes in the Olympics makes me feel very out of shape.  I need to run more often.
  • We just ordered this stroller and paid $100 dollars less for taking it in the color shown!  We have loved the convenience of the Snap 'N Go, but the babies are quickly growing out of their infant seats and need more comfort as we stroll.
  • The babies are sitting well unassisted, but still have the occasional falter.
 Happily Playing...
Oops!
  • I've perfected the double pick-up, the double hold and the double put-down.  It's a skill and great for the biceps to carry around 40lbs of baby.
  •  And just because I always laugh out loud at Chick's big startled eyes...
Perhaps I'm squeezing her a little too tightly?

Six Months of Joy

I attempted to get this video up and running in time for the babies' six month birthday, but a flu and some computer issues delayed the process.
This blog has become somewhat of an online life book for Chick and Pea and I'm glad that I have this forum in which to record their life's milestones.

Six Months

How can they possibly be six months old?

Dear Pea,

There is nothing in the world I love more about you than your big, open-mouthed smile. Daddy and I practically do "Rock, Paper, Scissors" just to be the one who gets to go into your room to get you up from your naps. Each of us wants to be the one to see that big sleepy smile. It's the most beautiful smile I've ever known.
You have the most contagious laugh as well and the strangest things make you chuckle. You love when I swing my pony tail around and especially love when I run up to you from far away. I love that you think I'm so funny.
You've recently begun blowing raspberries and we know when you're ready to be up for the day when we hear you making these sounds on the monitor. You don't mind the massive collection of spit that accumulates on your face when you do it and you also don't mind sharing that spit with us.
Throughout the last month, your two bottom teeth sprouted up.  After a few days of irritability, we saw the tips and instantly knew why.  We brush those two little teeth in the mornings and in the evenings and you love the taste of the Apple and Banana toothpaste we have for you.
You are rolling everywhere these days and we all think that you are very close to realizing that you have knees on which to crawl. Gramma thinks I should encourage you to crawl, but I don't. You have the rest of your life to be mobile. I want you all to myself for now.
Ever the studious sort, you love to stare at people and to touch them.  You especially like to watch your sister when she plays and you love to hold her hand.  When we feed you your bottle, you love to stare up at us and put your tiny hand on our chests, on our hands or on our faces.  You soak up the details and I often wonder what you are thinking.
We have yet to find a food that you won't eat and your size is showing it. You are massive, my little man and solid as a rock. Everyone who picks you up thinks you will make a great linebacker and we have to agree. You will be bigger than us someday, this is for sure. No matter how big you get, though, you will always be my little man. As your mother, I will always have the right to tackle you in a barrage of kisses and hugs; no arguments.

Dear Chick,

You are smitten with your daddy and love to be held by him.  When he walks out of the room, your eyes span the area in search of him and when he returns, your eyes light up like a million stars.  When daddy comes home from work, he gets your biggest smiles of the day and he loves every second of it.
This month, you have really begun to chat up a storm.  While playing with your toys, you will chatter away and, though we can't understand a word you are saying, we must admit that it sounds very interesting.  Most of the time you say things like, "Da da", "Ah Goo" and "I Ga" and sometimes you mix it up by saying each in different orders.  You look right into my eyes when you are talking and I talk right back to you as though I understand every word.
You have also begun to sit up unassisted. While I won't leave you on your own, you can generally sit for a good minute or so until you throw yourself backwards or sideways.  It's only a matter of weeks before you are sitting up on your own completely independently.
One of the things you love to do is to grab both of your feet and pull them right up to your mouth.  We've even caught you sucking on your toes during changing time.  We can't really blame you, as your toes are VERY yummy.
Your big, blue eyes melt everyone's heart when they see you and mommy and daddy are included.  You rarely cry, but when you do, your eyes become an even deeper blue than they normally are.  You have the most beautiful and smoochable lips we have ever seen and mommy and daddy spend a lot of time kissing them.  You don't really know what to do when we move in for our kisses, so you end up opening your mouth and licking us.  We don't mind one single bit.
You are incredibly smart and love to figure out how things work.  We've known this about you since only hours after you were born.  You're a hands-on kind of girl and love to touch a feel things to figure them out.
Just like me, you are fiercely independent and it is a trait that I will want to foster in you.  You like to do things for yourself, on your own terms and when it suits you best.  Who can blame you?  No matter how independent you are, though, I will always reserve the right to tackle you right down to the ground and smother you in kisses.  It's my right as your mother and I intend on exercising it regularly.
